Bruce Hecksel performs with Julie Patchouli Thursday night at “The Landscape of Guitar” in the Doudna Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. “We were warming up to this song (Sounds of Silence) and our tour manager came in and said ‘you should play that tonight.’ We looked at each other and then at him and said ‘it isn’t on the approved play list.’ Our tour manager said ‘I don’t care, you should play it.’ So we went out there and played the song and we were only four words in when the entire place erupted in cheers,” Patchouli said.

Rachel Webb, a graduate student studying secondary math education, studies Thursday afternoon in the Buzzard Hall lobby. Webb is a math teacher at Flora High School, and says she has one more summer before she is done with her master’s degree. “My program was designed so teachers could take classes over the summer, and not during the school year. I’ve enjoyed most of my classes, it’s six weeks of classes with a semesters worth of work. This way I don’t have to worry about teaching on top of my classes, it’s still a lot of work though,” Webb said. “My students are proud of me for getting my master's. One student asked me if I was getting my doctorate, and I said no, but he still called me Dr. Webb. My students look up to me more. They see me persevering and continuing my education and they think ‘maybe I can do that too’.”

Bailey Olsen, a senior graphic design major, donates blood Thursday afternoon in the Student Recreation Center at Lantz Arena. The Red Cross spent the day at the recreation center collecting blood from students, and community members. “I’m here over the summer so I can work and take classes. I got the call and figured, I’m not doing anything on Thursday, why not. I know that O+ is especially in need, I got O+, I’m not doing anything with it, might as well right,” Olsen said, “As a college student, I can’t always donate money to causes I like, I don’t always have time to go volunteer, so for this, I can come in for a couple of minutes. It’s something I can do to be helpful that doesn’t take a lot of my time or cost anything cause it’s free so, why not.”

Bayer has been playing for ten years and really enjoys giving lessons, especially during the summer when she has more free time. “During the school year it’s harder to get the time because of classes and practices,” Bayer said.

I was here last summer, there’s a lot less people. It’s interesting, my classes are smaller too so that’s nice. You’re taking 16 weeks of material and cramming them into a few weeks so the classes are very intense, but it’s easier to connect.” Ruppert said.

Karyn Best, a senior at Wheaton Academy, Paige Olson, a sophomore at Rochester High School, and Emelia Ness, a sophomore at Monticello High School, compete in the IHSA Girl’s State 2A 100-meter high hurdles Track & Field event held at O’Brien Stadium at Eastern Friday morning. Ness qualified for the finals held Saturday.

Erin Long, a senior at Sterling High School, competes in the 2A, 4x200 meter relay with her team at the Illinois High School Association Girl’s State Track & Field competition at O’Brien Stadium, at Eastern. Long and her teammates received fourth in the event.

Lauren Ferguson, a junior at Springfield High School, Sabrina Schlenker, a sophomore at Batavia High School, and Victoria Spagnola, a freshman at West Aurora High School, compete Friday morning in the Girl’s 3A Illinois State Track & Field 300- meter low hurdles race held at O’Brien Stadium at Eastern. Ferguson got first in her heat, Schlenker got second, and Spagnola got third respectively. Ferguson will go on to the finals on Saturday.

Brittany Rainey, and Kiara Pauli, both juniors at Dunlap High School, embrace after running in the 2A, 200-meter dash Friday morning at the Illinois High School Association State Girl’s Track & Field competition held at O’Brien Stadium at Eastern. Pauli received first in the race and will go on to compete Saturday in the finals.

Comedian Lafayette Wright entertains a crowd Thursday night at the 7th Street Underground in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union. Wright said this is his first time here and would gladly come back. Wright also said that this was one of the better crowds he has seen.
