New appointments and the voting for fall senate awards were done at the weekly student senate meeting on Wednesday.
Vice President of Student Affairs Mason Tegeler and Parliamentarian Megan Fox were appointed to the student publications board, which oversees the student publications at EIU including the Daily Eastern News, Minority Today, the Vehicle and Warbler according to EIU’s website.
Tegeler was also appointed to the WEIU Radio and TV advisory board and to the Booth collaborative advisory committee, which oversees the WEIU TV and radio station and Booth Library’s Faculty Development and Innovation Center respectively.
The senator of the semester for the fall is an award given to a senator that goes above their duty in the fall semester.
“They maintain a strong and active attendance in committee meetings, complete office hours promptly and provide great contributions to the student senate,” Speaker of the Senate Madison Veatch said.
Those nominated were Fox, senator Reagan Robson, senator Valerie Harmon, senator Payton Liggins, senator Sam Erwin and Veatch.
The new senator for fall award is given to a senator that meets the same reasons as the previously mentioned award but was appointed this semester.
Those nominated for this award were senator Justin Ambrose, senator Clint Chamley, senator Erwin, senator Andy Garcia, senator Anna Jones, senator Harmon, senator John Slater and senator Claire Weber.
These nominees were voted on by the members of the senate and the winners will be announced at the next student senate meeting.
Events discussed at the meeting included the Thanksgiving Bash is on Friday from 12 to 3 p.m. in the Bridge Lounge of the Martin Luther King Jr University Union. Students that bring canned food will be entered into a raffle for an EIU varsity jacket.
Dates for the executive board elections for the next academic year were also discussed.
The executive board consists of the student body president, executive vice president, speaker of the senate, VPSA, the student trustee and the elected senator.
Tabling events to gauge public interest will happen from Feb. 10-12.
On Feb. 28, there will be an informational meeting at 6 p.m. in the Martinsville room in the Martin Luther King Jr University Union about the different roles in the executive board.
Platform statements will be given by candidates for the positions at the senate meeting on April 2 at 7 p.m. Elections are held on April 14 till April 15 at 11:59 p.m.
The next student senate meeting will be held on Nov. 20 in the Grand Ballroom at the union starting at 6 p.m.
At that time, there will be a speech from and discussion with former Illinois governor and EIU graduate Jim Edgar.
The state of the senate will be presented by Veatch and then the state of the university will be given by Student Body President Taylor Cloud. There will also be a presentation by EIU Athletic Director Tom Michael on the grant-in-aid fees and the intercollegiate athletic fee.
