Managing
Hello there! My name is Alli Hausman, and I am the managing editor here at The News. I am a junior journalism major with a deep love for most things weird. At the DEN, I act as a final editor for near everything that we put out. Alongside this, with my new position, I run a majority of our physical print addition alongside Rob Le Cates. I love Pokémon to a probably obsessive degree, I am the biggest fan of bugs (cicada girl summer), I do bird calls, and I love to make people laugh. I love this staff, and I am excited to help these people grow as writers and journalists.
News
Hey everyone! I’m Jacob Hamm, and I am the new news editor! I am a senior, majoring in broadcast journalism. I have been a reporter for about a year and will continue to do so alongside serving as an editor. In my free time, I like to be outdoors, travel, shop and paint. My goals for the DEN are to diversify media content on all platforms by using different mediums, increase coverage of events in the greater Charleston area that are off campus and increase visitor traffic to the website.
Sports
Hey y’all! Zaria Flippin is back again as the head sports editor! For those that are new to Chuckvegas, I am a senior majoring in sports media relations and minoring in social media engagement coming from the grand ol’ state of South Carolina. From day one, my goal was to spotlight athletes as people. As a former athlete, I find it important to highlight athletes not just for their sport but for who they are outside of their sport as well. Through more TikToks and Instagram Reels, I want to implement more multimedia and video coverage of the Panthers. This year won’t be just your typical game stories. Get ready for more Staff Picks, player profiles, podcasts and features from the sports staff.
Photo
Hey, my name is Sia DeyKoontz, and I am the photo editor. I am also a radio DJ for hit-mix 88.9 WEIU and a barista in my hometown of Champaign. This is my second year at EIU. I love driving and making coffee (love drinking it too). I find the world interesting to capture in a photo and being able to visually communicate to the community. The world is open to everyone, and everyone has a story to tell. This includes the visual aspect that I can’t wait to share with you this year. Both of my parents went to EIU while my grandfather was a math professor in Old Main back in the day. I love small town Charleston and all the community aspects that are found on the campus. I can’t wait to continue to take photos for the Daily Eastern News and for our readers to see.
Opinions
Give it up for year four! My name is Rob Le Cates, and I will be your fall 2024 opinions editor. I’ve stepped down from my editor-in-chiefdom last year and can’t wait for what the year has in store for me. We are making a push this semester for more opinion pieces that are relevant to our audience. In addition to leading the opinions staff, I will be helping design our print publication like last year. Some might be tired of me by now, but as the end of my college career approaches, I realize how much me and the news organization have accomplished in these past few years. I consider it a privilege that I’ve been able to help cover the community I live in, and although I hate that my time at Eastern nears the end, I can’t wait to start myself in the professional field after graduation.
Multimedia
Hey! I’m Aidan Cusack, the multimedia editor at The News. I’m a sophomore sports media relations major. Last year I worked as a sports reporter at the DEN; I covered volleyball, women’s basketball and track. It was important for me to produce more multimedia last year, so me and another reporter made a sports show called Panthers Profiles. I hope to keep pushing our staff to produce more multimedia this year. My goal is to have video and audio stories this year so that reporters in the coming years have an easier time getting into that form of media.
