One man is at large and one person is in the hospital after a verbal altercation led to a shooting Sunday night, according to a news release issued by the Charleston Police Department.
Charleston police responded to the call around 8:50 p.m. Sunday near Ninth Street and Woodlawn Drive with reports of shots fired.
Police are searching for a man identified as Terrell Justin Rolle. He was described as male, 27 years old, 6 foot and 180 pounds, according to the news release. Police said that Rolle fled the scene but that authorities have possession of the firearm that was used.
Rolle is wanted for aggravated battery with a firearm.
Deputy Chief Joel Shute said that the shooting was an isolated incident that occurred between two individuals that knew each other.
Shute said during a telephone interview that “out of an abundance of caution,” Rolle should be considered armed and dangerous.
Police officers located a victim that had been shot once in the abdomen. Officers rendered aid to the victim who was ultimately taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, police said.
Eastern issued an AlertEIU crime advisory at 11:33 p.m., over 2 and a half hours after the shooting occurred. The alert stated, “The Charleston Police Department reported shots being fired at a residence near Ninth and Woodlawn, south of campus. The suspect fled the area, may or may not be armed.”
Eastern Illinois University followed up on Monday with an AlertEIU notification in which it specified that no EIU students were involved in the incident.
The Charleston Police Department said it was assisted by the Charleston Fire Department, Coles County Sheriff’s Office, Eastern Illinois University Police and the Mattoon Police Department.
