Residents of four apartment units were temporarily displaced after a fire Wednesday morning, according to a news release from the Charleston Fire Department.
Firefighters were initially dispatched at 7:17 a.m. to a potential gas leak at 912 Oakcrest Drive in Charleston based on a report of a chemical smell and haze.
This dispatch was upgraded to a report of flames showing from the structure at 7:19 a.m. An incident command official requested a box alarm activation just after 7:22 a.m., according to dispatch audio.
Firefighters discovered a six-unit apartment building with smoke and flames showing when they arrived on scene. Crews contained the fire to one apartment, but four apartments sustained damage from the incident. It was determined that nobody was inside of the apartment in which the fire originated at the time of the incident.
The Charleston Fire Department and the Office of the State Fire Marshal will investigate the cause of the fire.
There were no reported injuries as a result of the fire, according to a news release from the Charleston Fire Department.
