According to reports over the dispatch channel, Charleston Fire Department and EIU Police responded to Stevenson Hall at approximately 9:19 p.m. for a report of a gas odor.
Maintenance workers advised dispatch that they could smell an odor of gasoline on the east side of the building by the entrance to the dining hall, by the bike racks.
Upon arrival, firefighters worked to determine the cause of the odor.
Ultimately, crews determined that there was a small amount of diesel fuel on the back of the building next to a generator fuel tank. Firefighters suggested that a vent cap failure could have led to the small fuel leak.
Workers washed the area down to clean up the fuel.
Responders cleared the scene by about 9:32 p.m.
