BREAKING: Charleston apartment building fire displaces 3

On Friday morning, the Charleston Fire Department responded to a structure fire at an apartment building on 1136 W Hayes Ave.

At arrival, there was smoke and fire coming from one of the rear apartments on the first floor of the four rear apartments in the building.

Fire began to breach the window and started working up towards the second floor.

According to CFD, the fire appears to have started in the kitchen.

Additional personnel were called in, and the crews managed to put out the fire with minimum damage to the other three rear apartments.

There was significant fire, smoke and water damage to the apartment the fire started in displacing the three residents of the apartment who were not home at the time of the fire.

The other three adjacent apartments had minor smoke damage.

No injuries were reported, and the fire is currently under investigation.

CFD was assisted by the Mattoon Fire Department and the Charleston Police Department.
