Charleston Challenge Mid-Winter Classic race, Eastern jazz festival, more happening this week

This week there are multiple events for entertainment, informative and athletic at Eastern and in Charleston.

The African American Heritage Month, AAHM, kicks off with Black History Bingo Monday at 7 p.m. in the University Ballroom in the MLK Jr. Union.

On Wednesday, the Black Student Union and Alpha Phi Alpha present “Time Period Train” Through Black History in the Andrew Hall basement at 6 p.m. as a part of AAHM.

AAHM continues Thursday with “Everyone Wants to be Black Until it’s Time to be Black” presented by Zeta Phi Beta at 6:20 p.m. in Coleman Hall.

Eastern’s Pride gets involved with AAHM by hosting a movie night watching the film “The Same Difference” at 7 p.m. in the Coleman Auditorium on Friday.

Eastern’s 62nd Annual Jazz Festival is on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Doudna Fine Arts Center.

Guest Bob Sheppard will perform at the jazz festival along with Eastern’s Jazz Ensemble.

On Saturday, the Charleston Challenge Mid-Winter Classic race starts at Carl Sandburg School, 1924 Reynolds Drive, with the option of running a 5K, 10K or 15K.

There has staggered start times for each race length. The 15K starts at 10 a.m., the 10K starts at 10:15 a.m. and the 5K starts at 10:30 a.m.

There’s one water station in the 10K and 15K routes, and food and drinks are provided following the races.
