Coles County residents can properly recycle electronics this weekend at the Coles County Airport in Mattoon.
Electronic devices often have to go through a special disassembly process to avoid releasing hazardous materials, so most trash and recycling collection companies charge an extra processing fee or won’t accept them at all.
The Coles County Regional Planning Department has organized an event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 22 for people to recycle some of those devices.
Accepted items include:
Computers, computer monitors, laptops, keyboards and mice
TVs, DVD players and VCRs
Portable digital music players
Printers, fax machines and scanners
Video game consoles
Cable and satellite receivers
Digital converter boxes
Small-scale servers
A press release from the Coles County Regional Planning Department defines computers as “desktops, laptops, notebooks, netbooks, and tablets.”
There will be a $5 fee for each TV and monitor, and each visitor will be limited dropping off 7.
Proof of residency in Coles County will be required before you can drop off any items.
The event may end early if the semis provided to move things get filled up before 1 p.m.
