Shots fired near Greek Court over weekend

The Charleston Police Department responded to a report of shots fired early Saturday morning in the 2100 block of 11th Street.

Police say a large house party was taking place in the area north of Eastern’s Greek court when at least one person attending the gathering fired gunshots inside and outside of the house around 3:51 a.m.

There were no injuries on the scene.

While investigating, police executed a search warrant which led to the seizure of a quarter of a pound of psilocybin mushrooms and 10 pounds of cannabis.

Psilocybin mushrooms, commonly known as magic mushrooms or shrooms, are a schedule-I controlled substance which means it has a high potential for abuse and serves no legitimate medical purpose. The mushrooms are often used recreationally as a hallucinogen and typically cause users feelings of euphoria and sensory distortion.

Officers also found two firearms alleged to belong to Dameon R. Cooks and Daryl L. Jackson, both of Charleston. According to a press release, neither man has a valid F.O.I.D. card which is required of Illinois residents to legally possess firearms and ammunition.

Both men were placed in the Coles County Jail and are facing charges for possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis with intent to deliver and possession of a firearm without a F.O.I.D.

The charges are a Class 4 felony, Class 2 felony and a Class A misdemeanor, respectively.

The police are continuing an investigation into the shooting.
