Book selected for Eastern Reads 2021

Staff Report

Eastern Reads 2021 will feature “So You Want To Talk About Race,” Ijeoma Oluo’s book about today’s racial landscape.

The book discusses police brutality, mass incarceration, intersectionality, privilege, and more.

Even though the book was published in 2018, it gained attention in 2020 as the Black Lives Matter movement became a major news item.

Participants have to find their own copy of the book and do much of the reading independently, and then they can attend weekly discussion sessions in the month of February.

The sessions will be about an hour long, and participants can choose which time slot is most convenient for them.

The Eastern Reads facilitators say that “It is our hope that the book will inspire a productive dialog about the racism at our institution, in our community, and our country.”

Students, faculty, and staff can participate in Eastern Reads, but must register online at https://www.eiu.edu/volunteer/machform/view.php?id=85137.
