City Council to vote on annual tax levy Tuesday

The Charleston City Council will vote on the annual tax levy during its meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall.
The tax levy ordinance is for the fiscal year beginning on May 1, 2020, and ending April 30, 2021.
A resolution to approve the fire and police pension fund board report with regard to the annual tax levy will also be voted on.
The council will also be voting on a resolution to authorize the city to act on behalf of Charleston Police Department as a fiduciary on behalf of the East Central Illinois Task Force.
The task force’s purpose is “to disrupt criminal enterprises and remove the instrumentalities and proceeds of crime and to disrupt and dismantle major drug trafficking and money laundering organizations and their affiliates in the ECITF area of responsibility,” according to the resolution.
The task force is comprised of the Coles County Sheriff’s Office, the University Police Department of Eastern, the Mattoon Police Department, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Arcola Police Department.
Two raffle licenses will also be voted on.
One will be for St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Knights of Columbus to do weekly raffle weekly drawings from January 2020 to December 2020 at the Charleston Moose Lodge to raise funds to assist with charities and church maintenance.
The other raffle license will be for the Children’s Advocacy Center of East Central Illinois on February 29, 2020, at the LifeSpan Center to raise funds to support the services of the Children’s Advocacy Center.
Following the action items, time is reserved for members of the public to address the council. No action will be taken on matters not listed on the agenda, and the Council is not required to take any further action or to discuss the matter further.
The council asks that those who choose to address the council speak into the microphone, limit the presentation to three minutes and avoid repetitive comments.
