Nature center to host ornament-crafting class
December 3, 2015
The Douglas-Hart Nature Center will be providing a class from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday where community members can create ornaments out of natural materials.
The entire class is set up in an open house style where it is broken down into six stations where participants can make different ornaments at each station.
Doing it this way, allows the participants to go at their own pace and further their details if they want to.
Everything is provided for them when attending including scissors and glue so that no one has to worry about bringing anything extra, said Jenifer Day Tariq educations director.
Some of the natural materials that are provided are sticks and twigs, which are found in the surrounding nature environments and use to create their ornaments.
As well as berries, burlap, cardboard, old books, paper and light bulbs, where they create figures such as Christmas trees, and snowman.
Each table also has a step-by-step guide along with pictures of each ornament to give further help for everyone, so they can know how to put together each one.
However, it is still open for as much creativity the user want to include.
The program allows participates to not have to worry about any rules but can use their creativity to make their own ornaments at their own pace and interest.
“I love when they kind of detour away from the pictures I provide,” said Tariq.
It allows each person to add their own twist to their creation, which is what I look forward to seeing the most Tariq said.
Each person can make up to six ornaments, which it is theirs to keep.
The class has been a mixture of people whether it is all kids or a group of friends doing it for fun said Tariq.
Last year Tariq noticed that it was a parent and child combination that attended the classes together.
This class has been going on for more than ten years, and Tariq has been conducting it for seven years, but over this time span this class has evolved.
The materials have been updated and the ornament creations as well.
This year three of the ornaments are changed up that are going to be completely new for participates that may have participated last year while maintaining three traditional ornaments.
Every year we receive positive feedback which is why we continue to host the program Tariq said.
The class is capped off to about 25 people to guarantee that there will be room for everyone to move around and have enough supplies to share.
In order to be a part of the class registration ends Friday, Dec. 4.
Interested community members that want to participate can either call the Douglas-Hart Center or visit their website and register there.
The class is offered to the public and need to pay an $8 registration fee and, members of the center must pay $6.
