Alex Ward, a junior special education major, speaks to Officer Kent Jones, an officer in the University Police Department, about Reverend Mikhail Savenko and Ryan Simpkins presence on campus Monday near the steps of the Dounda Fine Arts Center. “The fact that they’re here on an Open House where there’s perspective students who want to come to Eastern actally frustrates me,” Ward said. Ward was encouraging students to file a formal complaint with the Charleston and University police departments. “The police are going to have to do something about it if they literally hear hundreds or thousands of students going ‘hey this is a problem I don’t feel comfortable with it’” Ward said “and if they are doing it through the legal system the way they’re supposed to then there’s no way they can ignore that.” Heather Webb, the Director of the Office of Student Standards, said there is nothing that the Unveristy can do about the evangelists. “Everyone has the right to free speech,” Webb said, “if students disagree to what they hear they are not obligated to listen to it.”
