Library and Success Center offering de-stressing events during finals
April 26, 2015
The Booth Library and Student Success Center are helping students de-stress for finals as the academic year comes to close.
With final exams approaching, students will most likely crowd the library rooms for study sessions. Booth library has made it a tradition to help students through finals week by encouraging study sessions, while also finding ways to help relieve the stress of exam taking.
In past year, the library offered snacks and drinks to the students as they came in to study. Also, Booth library aims to relieve students through therapeutic breaks that will involve puzzles, games and brain teasers. These will be set up in multiple stations in the library.
Beth Heldebrandt, the public relations director for the library, said there will be therapy dogs from the Charleston Area Dog Club visiting the campus. The dog owners are bringing them to let the students enjoy the company of the dogs for a while, which will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday outside on the North end of the library.
Along with therapy dogs, the library will be serving popcorn and lemonade for students to have a snack while studying, starting at 7 p.m. on May 4. Also, library hours will be extended to stay open until 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 2.
“We don’t want to distract the students from doing their work, we know you guys have a lot to do,” Heldebrandt said, “But at the same time, we don’t want you to get overwhelmed either.”
Heldebrandt advises all students to set up a study schedule and not cram too much. She also said to take one day at a time and stay relaxed.
The Student Success Center does not have any events planned; however, they are opening their doors to students to come in for any help they may need pertaining to finals. The center encourages the students to gain knowledge on test taking skills all semester long and will give testing taking tips to anyone who needs them.
Brian Gorman, the assistant director of the Student Success Center, said students should begin their studies a week ahead so that they are not cramming information in at the last minute. He also said students should get plenty of rest to be ready for long test taking weeks.
Student government will also provide de-stresser events during this week, as part of a five-day stress release series. The events include the following: Trivia Night, Zumba Night, Picnic with the Prez, Movie Night, and a Java social.
Movie night will be in at 7:30 p.m. in the Sigma Kappa Field and will show Monsters University.
