Summerscape to offer courses for children
June 10, 2014
Summerscape is a program offered for kids 6-18 years of age and it’s from June 1 until July 26 by the College of Continuing Education at Eastern.
Registration will be available until the day the classes start or when they are full and can be done through the website.
The first class offered is 2014 Creative Writing Camp for ages 12 – 18 and it goes from June 9-12.
This will be the first year that Summerscape can offer scholarships to enter into their program.
Peggy Brown, the first year program coordinator, said the program ranges from 200-250 children every summer with each program lasting a day or a week.
“This program gives the kids an alternative during the summer in Charleston,” Brown said.
Brown said that usually there would be about 60-70 kids in one program.
Summerscape has many different classes that the kids can take, from art to cooking.
“It’s a way to keep the kids’ minds active during the summer when they are out of school,” Brown said.
Every year they have returning kids and after they are out of high school they come back to teach or help plan out events for Summerscape, Brown added.
