CAA to review syllabus, general education, learning goals policies
The Council on Academic Affairs, with no academic revisions to vote on, will vote on various policy revisions at its meeting at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Arcola-Tuscola Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.
The revisions include changes to the CAA syllabus policy, the general education catalog description and the university learning goals for the catalog.
The first revision, to the CAA syllabus policy, involves reviewing of Eastern’s policy for all university syllabi, which has been in effect since 1995 on campus.
The syllabus policy revision specifically highlights the need for the review of all syllabi within a department periodically.
According to the proposal before the council, departments are encouraged to develop review procedures for syllabi.
Although the council has discussed a duration for which a syllabus must be periodically reviewed, the new policy revision does not specify a set time limit.
Other goals for the syllabus policy include fostering departmental discussion regarding academic proficiency.
“The suggested review process encourages departmental discussion of course rigor as well as instruction and evaluation of the intended course objectives,” the proposal said.
The proposed changes will also bring about better cohesion among courses, according to the proposal.
“The documentation and review process is intended to facilitate better consistency of curriculum delivery, alignment and rigor, all of which facilitate better student learning, transfer of skills, and outcomes at EIU,” the proposal said.
After reviewing the syllabus policy, the council will review the specifications that designate a course to be general education.
This chance comes after the council revised the university’s learning goals for Fall 2014, and the council is now adding the new learning goals to be included in general education courses.
The council will then vote to add the revised university learning goals to the academic catalog starting in Fall 2014.
