CAA approves new music course, various department revisions within physics, business
The Council on Academic Affairs approved revisions in the departments of physics, study abroad, music, kinesiology and sport studies and Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences as well as a new music course at its meeting Thursday.
After an hour and a half of discussion, the council was unable to finish all the items on the list. Those items will be moved to the next meeting, which will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Effingham Room in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.
CAA approved a revision to the physics option within engineering. This revision will allow the pre-engineering students to complete their degree at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
Before the revision, students were required to transfer to University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to complete the engineering degree.
Steven Daniels, the physics department chair, said the change will allow students another option when considering continuing their studies after Eastern.
“This revision will make the transition easier for the students who are in the pre-engineering program here at Eastern,” Daniels said.
Another revised course was the study abroad capstone. This revision was to add an online course for summer.
John Oliver, a kinesiology professor, said this online course will allow senior students to take the class specifically in the summer but not physically come to Eastern’s campus.
After a short debate about the course descriptions and how the oral presentation would work, it was approved.
For the department of kinesiology, the CAA approved six course revisions. The revisions for these classes would be adding online course, approve wording and the standards the department will expect of the students.
Oliver said the online courses are a huge item to the department because they will allow flexibility to the students.
A new course, MUS 2443, Coral Methods, will be added to the department of music. Anna Cromwell, a music professor, said the course was added to give students better preparation for when they teach choir.
“(The new course) will help students be better prepared to teach band, orchestra and choir,” Cromwell said.
The council also revised MUS 3860, Marching Band and Jazz Band Techniques, which will be added in Fall 2014 to allow students to work with Eastern’s marching band; the revisions also added a lab to the course.
Because of low enrollment, the Music with Performance Option major was revised to allow students to complete the option within one semester.
After the music changes, the CAA approved a revision to the military science minor which allows students to choose from six available courses to meet the minor’s history requirement. Available courses include the study of World War I, World War II and Vietnam.
For the Lumpkin College of Business and Sciences, the council approved a revision to BUS 3010, Management and Organizational Behavior. This course will now include online classes and hybrid classes.
A new course, BUS 3100, Survey of Marketing Principles, was proposed that would only apply to business minors; due to a lack of information, the council left the decision making for next week’s meeting.
After five members of the quorum left early, the meeting had to be called early, and all the requests not addressed at the present time and will have to wait next Thursday.
The seven items to be discussed for approval are in the college of business. The items will include, a new course for business minors, revised courses for the marketing major and business administration minor.
