Corpse flower makes one night opening
Eastern’s corpse flower is open for one night.
Steven Malehorn, greenhouse manager, said the titan arum blooms for one night and will close up Monday morning.
Malehorn said that the titan arum can reach 200 to 250 pounds in the wild, and split in two.
He said that they usually only pollenate when there in an area where they are crowded and competing for resources.
“I think that’s why mine is blooming every two years,” Malehorn said. “It’s not happy here.”
The titum arum smells bad in order to attract insects to pollenate the plant.
H.F. Thut Greenhouse will be open until midnight tonight and will be open from 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. tomorrow for those interested in viewing this rare event.
