Golf teams head to Butler
Both the men’s and women’s golf teams are set to compete at the Butler Fall Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind., this week. The Butler Fall Invitational will be the final fall event of the season for the Panther women’s team, while the men’s team will compete two more times. The men’s team is still set to compete at the DePaul Invitational and the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Invitational.
The two-day event will feature Chicago State, Valparaiso, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, as well as Ball State, Indiana State and Western Illinois.
Coming off two consecutive top-10 finishes, junior Emily Calhoon will look to have a repeat performance this week, but will also be fighting an injury.
“Emily (Calhoon) continues to fight a slight injury, but she’s doing alright,” said head coach Mike Moncel in a press release. “So it will come down to how well our top three girls are able to play.”
Calhoon’s 80.0 stroke average for the fall season leads all Eastern women’s golfers. Following behind Calhoon are junior Lauren Williams and sophomore Emily Fitzgerald. Williams owns a 81.6 average, while Fitzgerald has an average of 84.9.
“The ladies should continue to be very competitive this week if everyone stays healthy,” Moncel said in a press release.
On the men’s side, senior David Lawrence is coming off an individual title at the Wasioto Winds Fall Kickoff, while senior Gino Parrodi has a 73.0 average so far this season.
“Gino (Parrodi) and David (Lawrence) are very solid and definitely our leaders, while Tommy (Ponce) is starting to come around,” Moncel said in a press release.
Ponce, another senior on the Panthers’ roster, has an average of 74.0 so far this fall season. Sean Dozier is another senior. His season average currently stands at 74.3.
“Our men’s roster is very deep senior-oriented team this year, which makes for some good competition for starters,” Moncel said in a press release. “So I’m optimistic, this is the year that we’ll get to show off the team’s maturity and get it done.”
After the team’s first event, Moncel said he is optimistic for the team’s future.
“For the guys, I’m pretty optimistic as they are looking pretty good,” he said in a pres release.
The team also features freshman James Jansen of Effingham, who has a season average of 75.3.
“The rest of the group are also in there as the entire team continues to fight for a couple of spots,” Moncel said in a press release.
