Businesses not swayed by nearby violence

The recent shooting on Sunday, May 1, at Marketplace Mall in Champaign has not seemed to affect shoppers or businesses either locally or in Champaign.

The Cross County Mall in Mattoon has seen little to no change. A manager on duty at Radio Shack in the mall said it has been “business as usual.”

JC Penny and Elder-Beerman employees could not comment on the issue.

Dennis Robertson, the general manager at Marketplace Mall, said the larger stores in the mall have actually had steady or even increased business since the incident.

Although unable to comment on whether policy changes or precautionary measures have been taken, Robertson said he has been happy with how staff at the mall has responded.

“Anytime something happens, it’s a good time to review policy,” Robertson said. “I’m happy with the response and the action taken by security staff.”

The Wal-Mart in Charleston has not had any policy changes either. According to Jennifer Thomas, the assistant manager, such changes have not been needed.

“There have been no policy changes. We have plans in place for all those kinds of situations,” Thomas said.

The Sears department in the mall could not comment, and Sears Holdings Corporations in Hoffman Estates could not be reached.
