Spring Fling brings beach to campus
Starting today the Residence Hall Association will begin the week back from Spring Break by bringing the beach to Eastern with Spring Fling, a fun-filled week of activities where the residence halls will compete for points.
Dondre Keeler, the RHA vice president, said the Spring Fling is one of the last major activities RHA hosts.
“The idea of the week is to boost morale among students as we come back from spring break and start to get excited about summer,” Keeler said.
Each day this week, RHA will have a different activity for students to participate in. The week starts off with a giant game of twister.
Keeler said the event consists of an inflatable Twister mat and they will try and fit as many people as possible on it.
Each participant will receive two points for his or her residence hall and the last people standing will receive five extra points.
Keeler said the Spring Fling is very similar to the Residents On Campus Fest, but Spring Fling takes place during the spring semester while ROC Fest is in the fall.
This year’s Spring Fling theme is tropical with each residence hall being assigned a different tropical destination as a theme.
For example, the theme for Stevenson Hall is Jamaica and the theme for Andrews Hall is Hawaii.
Like ROC Fest, residence halls can accumulate points by having their residents participate in the various activities throughout the week. The hall with the most points will receive a prize.
Keeler said each residence hall has the opportunity to gain points for decorating residence hall windows according to the theme.
At the end of the week the RHA will judge each hall’s window painting and determine the winner of the window painting contest.
Nicci Vergara, the RHA Community Development Chair, is in charge of the event but she could not be reached for comment. Keeler said that Vergara had been thinking about the theme for a long time.
“She came into the position knowing what she wanted to do, I think part of the idea was to boost moral while the weather is still so icky out.” Keeler said. “We are definitely looking forward to a fun packed week.”
Events will take place throughout the week in celebration of Spring Fling. To end the week, a lunch will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Friday in Taylor Hall Dining Center. All students are encouraged to attend the Spring Fling events.
