Column: Stars need to align for basketball
The Panther men’s basketball team is about to play the most important game of the season against Austin Peay on Thursday.
After suffering an eight-game losing streak, all of which were Ohio Valley Conference games, the Panthers are in ninth place in the standings and one full game behind the University of Tennessee-Martin. Martin also holds the individual tie-breaker as it beat Eastern twice this season.
Eastern is coming off a win against Toledo in ESPNU’s Bracketbuster event. Even though Toledo had only won four games all season, any win has to give the Panthers confidence. It takes the proverbial monkey of their back.
If the Panthers had lost to a lowly Toledo team, I would say they have no chance to beat Austin Peay on Thursday; however, since they did win, I believe they have a good chance of winning.
Earlier this season, Eastern lost to Austin Peay in overtime 77-73, but at one point in the second half, the Panthers had a 13 point lead. This shows that the Panthers can compete with Austin Peay, and seeing as how Eastern has a lot more to play for than the Governors, I think they will come out with more fire and win the game.
It should be a close game, as Austin Peay has a pretty good team this season, and they are always well-coached.
I think it will come down to the last couple plays. The team that goes on a late run in the second half will win the game and I believe with its season on the line that will be Eastern.
The Panthers have had a rough season, as they have struggled with inconsistent play and the loss of senior guard Tyler Laser really hurt. Laser could space the floor with his shooting ability, he was also one of the captains and vocal leaders of the team.
Even without Laser, the Panthers have the talent to perform well in the OVC, and could make a run if they make it to the tournament. Junior guard Jeremy Granger has solidified himself as one of the best point guards in the conference.
Of course, Eastern could win both of its games against Austin Peay and Tennessee State and still miss the tournament, as their tournament life is not completely in their hands. If UT Martin wins one of its home games against Eastern Kentucky or Morehead State, the Panthers will miss the tournament.
A lot of stars need to align for Eastern to make the OVC tournament, but the only thing the team can concentrate on is winning if it takes care of its end of the deal maybe the universe will align the stars in its favor.
