Carman Hall voodoo dolls are alternative to romance
The Carman Hall Dining Center is providing an opportunity for students to express their anti-Valentine’s day sentiments by creating voodoo dolls.
Kadija Stallings, a freshman visual arts major, said making anti-Valentine’s Day voodoo dolls would be a fun way to let out stress.
“The voodoo dolls would be a good opportunity for people like me that don’t have a Valentine to just unwind and do something humorous,” Stallings said.
The Carman Hall Dining Center hosted this event in past years and provided students with straws, cotton balls, assorted fabrics, pantyhose, pipe cleaners and other decorative materials to create an anti-Valentine voodoo doll.
Taylor Davis, a sophomore communications major, said Valentine’s Day was invented by candy and cardboard companies to sell more products and it puts a lot of pressure on people to spend money in general on things like chocolates and cards.
“I think the voodoo doll activity is a new, creative way for people to express their opinion on Valentine’s Day without all of the cheesy pink and red hearts,” Davis said.
Students can make an anti-Valentine’s Day voodoo doll in the Carman Hall Dining Center at a designated table where materials are available.
Destiny Winford, a freshman psychology major, said Valentine’s Day has become overrated because instead of enjoying a fun holiday, a lot of people stress out with randomly trying to find someone to be their Valentine.
“As a child, Valentine’s Day was a lot of fun with little Valentine cards and school parties, but as you get older all of the fun gets sucked out of it because of the pressure of finding a Valentine,” Winford said.
Stallings agreed.
“Valentine’s Day has become very commercial where people take it really seriously and waste money so the anti-Valentine voodoo doll activity should be a great way to make fun of Valentine’s Day and all its craziness,” Stallings said.
Students can create an anti-Valentine voodoo doll today between 4:45 to 8 p.m., which are Carman Hall’s regular dinner hours.
Along with the voodoo doll activity, an anti-Valentine’s Day meal is available at Carman during dinner hours and the meal includes broken heart cookies.
