Boey brings in second OVC honor this month

Red-shirt junior Zye Boey was named Ohio Valley Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week for the second straight week.

Boey took first place in both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash at last weekend’s Badger Track Classic, held at the University of Wisconsin. Boey’s 200-meter dash time of 21.45 currently stands as the third best time in the NCAA so far this season.

Also competing for Eastern at the Badger Track Classic was senior Fresline Saintoiry, who took fifth place in the women’s weight throw event with a distance of 51’11.75″. On the men’s side, freshman Blake Stokich placed fourth with a distance of 46’10”.

Sophomore Jamiee Roy took fourth place in the women’s long jump with a distance of 17′, while sophomore Tiffany Beachy placed fifth in the women’s high jump with a mark of 5’2.50″. Junior Tyler Allen took second in the men’s triple jump event with a distance of 45’3.75.

In the men’s 4×400 relay, the team consisting of freshman Cody Boarman, senior Darren Patterson, red-shirt senior Patrick Tortorici and senior Preston Smith placed second with a time of 3:18.67.

The next competition for the Panthers track and field team will be Saturday Jan. 22 at the Lantz Fieldhouse for the EIU Mega Meet.

A special ceremony will take place during the meet to honor former Eastern athlete and coach, John Craft, who also competed in the 1972 Munich Olympics. A special jersey will be retired in Craft’s honor.

Around the OVC

Junior Lydia Kosgei of Eastern Kentucky was named Ohio Valley Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week. The Kenyan native runner posted a time of 4:47.69 for the mile run at the University of Kentucky’s Kentucky Track and Field Invitational, which currently ranks as the fastest in the OVC, and ninth fastest in the country.

Senior Brandon Colbert of Southeast Missouri State was named Ohio Valley Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week for his first place shot put performance at the Saluki Open, held at Southern Illinois University. Colbert currently holds the longest shot put thrown in the OVC so far this season.

Junior Shemekia Brewer of Southeast Missouri State was named Ohio Valley Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week after winning the triple jump at the Saluki Open. Brewer’s mark of 12.24 meters was only two inches short of being a school record, but was enough to win the event.
