Liquor ordinance will be voted on Tuesday
The city council will meet Tuesday to vote on a new liquor ordinance.
The liquor ordinance would require restaurants and bars to have their kitchens open while serving alcohol.
A tentative liquor ordinance was voted on at the last council meeting, but Mayor John Inyart wanted to add a provision to the ordinance.
The provision will exempt banquet facilities from the ordinance.
Under the provision, banquet facilities can continue the sell of alcohol while the kitchen is closed for the evening.
The only banquet facility that the provision will exempt is the Two Flowers at the Worthington Inn.
Inyart said if they had voted on the ordinance without the provision then wedding receptions could not continue serving alcohol after their kitchen was closed.
Thirteen restaurants and bars could be affected by the new ordinance.
The council will also vote on authorizing a street closure for Charleston Mid-Winter Classic Foot Race.
The council will vote on temporarily closing the traffic and parking in certain streets in Charleston from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
“The street closure will ensure the safety of the runners,” Inyart said.
The whole street will not be closed down for the runners, but the Charleston Police Department and volunteers will look out for the safety of the runners.
The footrace will take place from 10 -11 a.m. on Feb. 5, and is sponsored by the Charleston Parks and Recreation Department.
The council will also vote on proclaiming the month of February Black History Month.
Black History Month was originally adopted by Dr. Carter Godwin Woodsin to commemorate and honor black history in the United States.
The city council meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.
