Health Services closed due to ‘suspicious package’

The Health Service building has been closed until further notice due to reports of a suspicious package.

Around 1:45 p.m. Dan Nadler, the vice president for student affairs, said the suspicious package was investigated and determined not to be a threat to the campus. The Human Services building is now open and operating normally according to the e-mail.

Nadler sent out an e-mail at 11:15 a.m. to all staff and students informing the campus of the building’s closure as a precautionary measure. The building was evacuated earlier this morning when a report was received about a suspicious package, according to the e-mail.

Vicki Woodard, the university spokesperson, confirmed the information in the e-mail and said the investigation is currently ongoing.

The EIU alert system sent out a text message around 11:30 a.m saying that the building is temporarily closed as a precautionary measure. For further information the message referred people to their Eastern e-mail account.

Signs on all of the Health Service building doors read “Do Not Enter” and “Closed until further notice.”

Emergency personnel from the campus and the city were gathered on the east side of the building along Seventh Street.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
