The Intramural wiffleball regular season continued last Tuesday with Grey League teams in action.

The Grey League features five teams and competes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Student Recreation Center.

The rules of intramural wiffleball are similar to that of regular softball, only with teams consisting of six or seven players each. The two teams play a seven innings or 45 minute game.

The pitcher is a member of the same team batting, with the entire opposing team playing defense. Each batter is only allowed three pitches to hit the ball.

The first scheduled game was set to feature Sigma Pi Purple and Pike Gold. Sigma Pi Purple came into the game with an undefeated 2-0 record, while Pike Gold had already given up one game to a forfeit.

After Pike Gold failed to report to the game again, Sigma Pi Purple was awarded the victory.

Despite being disappointed about not being able to play, Sigma Pi Purple players were still excited about being undefeated.

“It’s disappointing, but we’ve moved on. We’re in this for the cup,” freshman Mike Wielgat said.

Junior Cameron Meyer and freshman Clayton Seno said that they both look forward to playing each week, but they were excited to be 3-0.

The second game of the night would feature Sigma Pi White against Pike Garnet. Sigma Pi White came into the game winless at 0-2, while Pike Garnet was 1-1.

In the first inning, Sigma Pi White managed one hit down the third base line, but followed it with three straight fly-outs. Pike Garnet couldn’t manage any offense either, with the first three batters being thrown out.

The second inning again saw Sigma Pi White again unable to generate any offense, while Pike Garnet managed three runs to put them ahead.

Sigma Pi responded in the top of the third inning with two runs, to cut the Pike lead to one, but the Pikes responded again with one run at the end of the third inning.

In the fourth inning the Pikes kept the score tied at 3-3. Sigma Pi came back with a one, two, three bottom of the fourth.

In the fifth inning, Sigma Pi managed to hit three straight singles, but still came away empty handed. The Pikes didn’t have much better luck, as the only managed one single and then hit three straight fly balls to end the inning.

The sixth inning was critical for Sigma Pi, as a sacrifice fly towards the end of the inning gave them a 4-3 lead. The Pikes responded with two RBI singles to give them a 5-3 lead.

Sigma Pi was unable to score any runs in final inning, giving the Pikes the victory.

Two players for the Pikes, seniors Sam Kuester and Travis Jaggers, felt that their haircuts were the main keys to victory for the Pikes. Kuester donned a mullet, while Jaggers sported cornrows.

The two said that they didn’t normally wear their hair in such fashions, but wanted to have fun with it. Both players considered the possibilities of wearing their hair like that again if it meant success for the Pikes.

“I do believe it was a key to victory for us today. I’ll probably keep them in for Thursdays’ game,” Jaggers said.

The Pikes will play Sigma Pi Purple on Nov. 11 at 8 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center.
