RHA readies for Midwest conference
Select members of the Residence Hall Association will be attending the annual Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls conference at the University of Illinois this weekend.
This conference includes Michigan, Ontario, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana, with the goal of creating leadership environments on campuses across the Midwest.
References to this event were met with applause at Thursday evening’s weekly meeting.
Other events that were anticipated included the Social Justice and Diversity committee’s Tunnel of Oppression event occurring Dec. 2 and 3 at 6 p.m. in Andrews Hall.
Leeann Kirchner, a sophomore English major and member of the committee, said the event planners hope to raise awareness about the importance of diversity and patience.
“They have an entire floor that’s empty and they fill each room with some type of stereotype, like the oppression of females based on their gender,” Kirchner said. “We’re doing stigmas attached to mental illnesses like depression or O.C.D.”
The social justice and diversity committee will also be teaming up with the finance and service committee to pass out candy and hot chocolate over the holiday season to raise money for these events.
Dondre Keeler, a sophomore family and consumer science major and the RHA vice president, looked forward to this prospect the most.
“One thing I really like is that they’re coming together to raise money for different causes,” Keeler said. “In the past the committees don’t usually work together. They always plan events on their own and this time I’m really looking forward to them working together.”
During general reports, the Greek Court representative let others know that their Ghosts and Goblins event this past weekend for local trick-or-treaters was a success and only a few people cringed as Thomas Hall’s representative announced the start of their No Shave November contest. Allison Salo, a junior recreation administration major, said RHA meetings have not failed her yet as far as entertainment goes.
“I mean, even though it’s a meeting, it’s still interesting,” Salo said. “And I enjoy talking to people and getting involved.”
