This weekend Eastern’s volleyball team went on the road to continue their Ohio Valley Conference schedule, and split a pair of matches, defeating Tenessee-Martin Friday night before losing at Murray State Saturday morning.
Friday night’s win in Martin, Tenn. gave the Panthers a three-game winning streak, their first streak since the first three games of the season, when they defeated Bryant, Harvard, and New Hampshire in their first three matches of the Harvard invitational.
With the win, the Panthers climbed back above the .500 mark overall, as their record rose to 11-10 on the season.
The Panthers were led by senior outside hitter Alex Zwettler, who posted 14 kills to go along with 10 digs for her 43rd career double-double.
Freshman outside hitter Reynae Hutchinson also had a good night on Friday, notching the third double-double of her career, with 11 kills and 16 digs.
Senior outside hitter Erin Hake and sophomore middle hitter Alison Berens also made significant offensive contributions, putting up 10 kills each.
Also, junior libero Brittany Wallace led Eastern by digging 20 Sky Hawk attacks.
The momentum would be short lived, as the Panthers were swept the next afternoon by Murray State.
The Panthers had beaten the Racers in four sets at Lantz Arena earlier in the season.
Hake led all Panthers in the loss with 11 kills and a .296 attack percentage, and added eight digs to end up two ups shy of a double-double.
Zwettler and Hutchinson also contributed to the Panther offense, with 10 and nine kills, respectively.
The Panthers were out-hit by the Racers .250 to .117, as Eastern committed 24 attack errors.
The loss to Murray State dropped the Panthers OVC record to 3-6, with an overall record that currently stands even at 11-11.
The Panthers next match will be on the road next Friday night at Southeast Missouri State. The Red Hawks are the last OVC team the Panthers have not played yet.
The next home match was scheduled for the next day against Southern Illinois- Edwardsville, was cancelled due to scheduling conflicts with Lantz Arena.
Their next home match will now come against the Sky Hawks of Tennessee- Martin on Tuesday, Oct 26.
The Panthers have nine matches left in the regular season, all against OVC opponents. Of the nine games, four will be at Lantz Arena.
