Students to learn about Latin culture

The Latin American Student Organization (LASO) will host a trivia night, “Vas o No Vas,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday to educate and entertain students on Latin American culture through an interactive game of Jeopardy.

The event will be in the Martinsville Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.?

Participants will be split up into three teams and will answer questions among those teams to learn more, have fun and earn the highest points.

The night will consist of a few rounds of Jeopardy and end with a final Jeopardy question. The team with the highest points overall will be rewarded with donated items from the bookstore.

“Vas o No Vas” is one of the many events the LASO has organized to educate students.

This event will be the first time the student organization has done a Jeopardy-style event in the last two years

“Take a challenge to attend and pick up a new random piece of trivia,” said Dana Barnard, the LASO adviser.

Questions can range from food, geography, politics, entertainment and traditions of the Latin culture.

Students who want to attend “Vas o No Vas” do not need prior knowledge of Latin culture and students are encouraged to come learn more, Barnard said.

Questions will also be based off of basic Latin culture that many people already know.

“Some people know facts of Latin culture already, so it ranges from basic facts to more advanced questions like any game of Jeopardy,” said Elizabeth Smith, the president of the LASO.

The LASO is reaching out to students during Latin American Heritage Month to give them more of a perspective and gain awareness on the culture. ?

“A lot of people know already what a Quinceañera is, so we are trying to broaden student’s knowledge besides the basic facts on Latin culture,” Smith said.

Latin American Heritage Month ends October 15 and events will be hosted every week until then.
