Panthers should enjoy being the underdog
Even though the Panthers did not get out to the start that we all had hoped for, I feel that this team still has a lot of potential to be good this season.
Eastern will continue to play a tough physical game and play solid defense. This will keep them in contention virtually every game. Once the team gets in sync offensively they could be very good.
Senior forward Alex Harrison is on the verge of busting out as one of the top scoring threats in the Missouri Valley Conference. He is the Panthers active leader in goals, assists, points and game-winning goals.
This preseason he led Eastern with 2 goals in three games. That stat shows the potential that Harrison has.
This preseason the Panthers tied strong opponents in Butler and Green Bay. In each game they scored two goals but they we unfortunate and also gave up two goals in both games as well. When the Panthers finally get all the aspects of their game working at the same time, teams are going to need to watch out.
I feel like the Panthers really do have a good chance at contending for the MVC title; however, the task will be tough. Two teams from the MCV are nationally ranked and one more team received votes for the rankings.
The highest ranked team is Drake at No. 22 but they were ranked as high as No. 14 early this preseason. Creighton broke into the top 25 with its 2-0 start. They now sit at No. 24 in the nation. Also Evansville received seven votes, which make them another formidable opponent.
These rankings also leave out last year’s regular season champion, Missouri State, who should be back with another tough team.
The Panthers have a very tough schedule ahead of them but if they get their game working cohesively they should be able to contend with any of those teams.
I am excited to watch this season unfold for the Panthers because they have never won the MVC tournament or regular season title.
I am the type of person who always likes cheering for the underdog and Eastern is just that.
The odds are not stacked in their favor but there’s nothing better in sports than a good Cinderella story.
