Arnold focused for outdoor season

Eastern senior thrower Kandace Arnold owns three school records for the Eastern women’s track program.

She wrapped up her final indoor season with the 20-pound weight throw and the shot put records. She already had the discus record.

Arnold wants the shot put and the hammer throw record as well. She’s second in both of those events.

“I really just want to finish my last season strong,” Arnold said.

Arnold did not win an event at Ohio Valley Conference championships, a rarity.

“I would definitely like to make up for that,” Arnold said. “(Southeast Missouri’s Ashley Brewer) is better than me at discus. I don’t know what happened to me outdoors. It kind of went downhill. I was very sad last year. I wasn’t happy with my performance.”

Arnold said she is excited for the teams for the outdoor season.

The Panthers open up the outdoor season with the Eastern Invitational on Friday and Saturday at O’Brien Field.

Five teams will compete: Eastern, Loyola of Chicago, Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Indiana State and Wisconsin Milwaukee.

Boey progressing from surgery

Red-shirt sophomore Zye Boey estimates he’ll be back on the track in two weeks.

Boey is recovering from a torn knee tendon and surgery in January and at this point is jogging. He hasn’t been able to do a lot of running at this point either.

“I just have to make sure I come back the correct way,” he said.

He said he’s feeling good at about 60 percent and feels a lot better than he did a couple of weeks ago.

“I feel more healthy,” he said. “I feel a lot more relaxed.”

Boey was the 2009 Daily Eastern News Male Athlete of the Year, Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and qualified for both NCAA national championships – indoor and outdoor track.
