Inyart prepared to give State of City at Saturday’s ‘Luau’

Saturday evening the University Ballroom in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union will be filled with a different kind of crowd.

The Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce has rented the room for a “Luau for the Locals,” an annual dinner and awards ceremony.

At the dinner, Mayor John Inyart will give the annual State of the City report.

“I’ll mainly talk about the new construction projects coming up in the next year, the city’s budget and different public works projects,” Inyart said.

Awards for Outstanding Citizen of the Year, Diplomat of the Year and Small Business of the Year will be presented as well.

Hawaiian food will be served at $45 per reservation.

After the audit report was given at the last city council meeting, the city’s budget will be on everyone’s mind.

“I’ll let everyone know the city is in good financial shape, but like everyone else, we will be tightening our belt,” Inyart said.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, followed by the State of City and the passing of the gavel.

Dinner will be served at the addresses and the local award presentations will conclude the night.
