Martin named new vice president for university advancement

Bob Martin, currently serving as assistant vice president for development at Auburn University in Alabama, has been chosen to replace Jill Nilsen as vice president for university advancement.

Martin will officially begin his new job on February 1, 2010.

According to a story written on Nov. 11, Martin’s plans for the position include fundraising for academic scholarships. And throughout his career, Martin has done a lot of fundraising.

At Auburn University, Martin led teams that raised $608 million. He also worked as assistant vice chancellor for development for the University of Tennessee, helping raise $200 million.

“In tough economic times, we need to let people know that their private gifts are no longer icing on the cake,” Martin said in a press release. “They need to know that those gifts are a necessity in order to maintain the quality EIU experience our students expect and deserve.”

President Bill Perry sent out an email informing students on Tuesday, Dec. 22. “I am pleased…that Robert Martin…has accepted the position,” Perry said. “Upon Mr. Martin’s arrival in February, I hope you will join me in welcoming him to the Eastern family.”

Martin said he is looking forward to working at Eastern, as well as getting to know faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the university.

“I want to become a part of the EIU team and family,” he said.
