MAP grant restored for spring
The Illinois House of Representatives restored $205 million toward the Monetary Award Program grant for spring 2010 Thursday.
Hours prior to approval, student lobbyists traveled to Springfield to urge state government officials to approve the funding, which had been cut in half in July, falling $200 million short of aiding recipients.
The money will be dedicated solely toward assisting recipients for the spring 2010 semester, but still amounts to $15 million less than originally intended to aid all recipients. Lawmakers will have to reconvene to determine how to provide for subsequent school terms.
