Panther Briefs: Klaus posts top team finish at Lucian Rosa Invite
Red-shirt freshman Olivia Klaus paced the Eastern women’s cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Lucian Rosa Invitational Saturday in Kenosha, Wis.
Klaus finished in third place among scoring competitors in the 5,000-meter race as she finished in 18 minutes, 33.6 seconds.
Senior Erin O’Grady finished 14th in 19:04.01. Sophomore Brittany Arthur was 23rd in 19:19.3 followed by freshman Danielle Dickman in 38th in 19:41.1. Freshman Gabriela Duenas rounded out Eastern’s scoring with a 46th-place finish in 19:59.0.
Ferris State was the repeat event champion scoring 60 points in the 5,000-meter race. DePaul was second with 93 followed by Marquette at 97 and Eastern with 124 team points. Ferris State’s Tina Muir won in 17:45.8 while Lewis’ Kathryn Hague was second in 18:20.9.
In the women’s 4,000-meter race, Eastern was second finishing behind Indianapolis. Freshmen Britney Whitehead and Erika Ramos finished third and fourth in 15:47.4 and 15:53.4.
Men’s golf in ninth place
Sophomore Gino Parrodi led the Eastern men’s golf team in the first day of the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate Sunday at the Weibring Golf Course in Normal.
Parrodi, who earned All-Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer honors last spring, led the Panthers with a 2-over-par 72 and is tied for third at the par-70 6,681-yard course.
As a team, the Panthers shot a 304 (+24), which is three strokes behind fourth-place Western Illinois and Missouri-Kansas City.
Illinois State leads the field with a 293-stroke count and leads Loyola of Chicago by one stoke. Bradley senior Zach Wanken leads the field with a 1-under-par 69.
Senior Matt Bird (77), sophomore David Lawrence (77) and junior Francisco Cherizola (78) round out Eastern’s scoring.
The second and third rounds will be finished starting at 8:30 a.m. today.
