Missouri State2-1-16-3-2Evansville2-28-4Eastern Kentucky4-44-13Eastern Illinois1-34-5-2Bradley0-35-5-1The Creighton men’s soccer offense continues to dominate Eastern.
In a matched postponed one day by temperatures and snow flurries, Creighton came out with a mission.
Five goals. Twenty-six shots. Three first-half goals. Eleven corner kicks.
The Bluejays posted five goals for the second straight year against Eastern as the Bluejays won 5-1 on Sunday afternoon in Omaha, Neb.
“It was a disappointing result, disappointing play, we’ve got a lot of work,” Eastern head coach Adam Howarth said.
The Panthers have dropped three of their first four Missouri Valley Conference matches.
Creighton (5-2-2, 3-1-1 MVC) matched its season-high of five goals with a goal in the fourth minute, 14th minute, 42nd minute, 47th minute and 89th minute.
“They played their best game of the year,” Howarth said. “We had a hard time keeping up with them.”
Creighton senior forward Jeff Thayer scored the first goal off a rebound shot. Sophomore midfielder Ethan Finlay added the game-winner in the 14th minute from about 12 yards out. With 3 minutes, 33 seconds left in the first half, red-shirt senior midfielder Seth Sinovic scored off a crossing pass. Sophomore midfielder Kris Clark’s goal to the lower left corner from 12 yards out increased Creighton’s lead 4-0 in the 47th minute.
The Panthers lost 5-3 last season in Charleston. The five goals are the largest amount of goals Eastern (4-5-2, 1-3-0) has given up in a match since the loss to the Bluejays last season.
“They just played well,” Howarth said. “They were up for it.”
The only highlight for Eastern was junior forward Alex Harrison’s lone goal in the 48th minute. Eastern finished with five shots, only two on goal. Harrison’s goal came off a free kick from 35 yards out.
Harrison’s goal was the 15th of his career and ranks sixth all-time in the MVC era for the Eastern program.
The Bluejays added a header goal from senior forward Thomas Gjoesund with 1:49 left.
“It’s hard to say, our performance needs to improve a lot,” Howarth said. “We’ve got the talent. We didn’t perform to our ability.”
Eastern junior goalkeeper Sean Molony finished with a season-high 10 saves.
After scoring three goals against Missouri State on Oct. 4, the Panthers have only scored two goals since.
“It was frustrating,” Howarth said. “We weren’t firing on all cylinders.”
Howarth said the Panthers couldn’t get the ball out of their half of the field. He also said no one could find the forwards’ feet.
Eastern returns to action against Bradley at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Lakeside Field. The Braves have not registered a win in the MVC this season.
