Column: DEN sports gets more interactive

It’s not uncommon in the world of collegiate journalism to see quite a bit of changes in a student newspaper from year to year. With new students come new editors, and new editors means new ideas.

This is true all over the country and you see it right here in The Daily Eastern News.

As you look through this paper and compare it to last year, you’ll see a number of new names, new designs and an overall new look in the coverage and layout of The DEN.

It’s true all over, and it’s true in sports.

The ever-evolving world of journalism has made the Internet a necessary tool in spreading the word of whatever said publication is geared toward. The sports department at The DEN has taken that mindset to heart and is bringing you, the reader, the most up-to-date system of finding out what’s happening with Eastern athletics and beyond.

At the top of this page you’ll see our “Tweet of the Day.” Twitter is an incredible tool for the media and we want to take advantage of it to bring you the news. So if you follow us @DEN_Sports, you’ll get up-to-the-minute breaking news from within the athletic department, scoring updates from events, and extra tidbits our reporters are noticing while they’re out on the beat.

But Twitter is not the only thing we’re bringing to the table. Coverage at dennews.com is bigger and better than ever with expanded features, blogs, podcasts and more. As you might notice, The DEN has not been immune to the economic crisis our nation has faced over the past year, but that doesn’t mean our content will struggle. While you might not find three full pages of sports coverage in the print edition each day, you’ll find more coverage of Eastern athletics online at dennews.com, giving our readers a great insight into the minds and matters concerning our university.

Our ultimate goal is to serve you, the reader, so feedback is always welcome.

We want to be your main source for Eastern athletic news, so if you have a question, suggestion or concern with what you’re seeing in print – or online – e-mail DENsportsdesk@gmail.com or call the office at 581-7944. Heck, even tweet us. We’d be more than happy to listen.

So sit back, relax and strap it down for another year of sports coverage from The DEN.

But be prepared, because this isn’t your father’s sports page anymore.
