On Tuesday evening, fitness instructor Rendi Lowrance met an eager group of fitness junkies.
She greeted them with one inquiry: “Where do you want to go today?”
Whether they had chosen Italy or the beautiful Hawaiian coast, the class was in for an hour-long, power-charged cycling session. These lucky few were able to enjoy it from the comfort of the Student Recreational Center.
Group fitness introduced a spinning class that meets twice a week to the schedule this summer.
Tracking trends in fitness, Ken Baker, director of campus recreation, expects the class to take four or five spots in the fall and others may be cut to make more room if they become unpopular.
“The demand will be on cycling for sure,” Baker said.
With only 15 bikes, participation has been limited to a first-come, first-serve basis and some cyclist enthusiasts have been turned away this summer session.
Baker said to ensure all students have the opportunity to spin, a sign-up system will be implemented for the fall.
He added that protocol would be worked out in the fall with the students’ best interest in mind. With a heavy emphasis on high-intensity cardio, first-timers are encouraged to bring a towel and water.
Program director Sarah Daughtery warns students, “Come expecting to sweat a lot because you are going to.”
