Editorial: Men also get scared
My cousin Amanda is totally crushing over this guy at her high school.
He’s a year older, has dark hair, brown eyes and every time I talk to her on Facebook, she’s telling me about something that’s happened between them.
“OMG OMG OMG!! He finally asked me to prom!!
He hugged me 🙂
We’re going to the movies on Saturday! Alone!
He told my friend that I’m the only girl for him.”
Me: “You should ask him out!”
“I can’t. I’m too scared. I’m waiting for him.”
Me: “Amanda!!!”
So when I went home last weekend with my boyfriend to visit my family, my mom told me that Amanda and my aunt would be stopping by after dinner to show us the prom pictures.
And let me tell you-in almost every single picture, this guy looked totally nervous. I’m not even kidding you.
There were some nice ones where they were both smiling, but he looked like he was really trying to impress her.
Amanda has filled me in about the many things he’s done that go into the He Likes Her category, but for some reason, he’s just too scared to ask her out.
So, I have been trying to tell Amanda that she needs to do it herself-just ask him out, it’s not a big deal. You know he likes you!
“Well, if you’re not going to ask him out, you should at least ask him to hang out with us tomorrow.” (Like a double date!)
This is when me, my boyfriend, my mom, my sister, and my aunt all took aside about an hour and a half to try and convince her to press the send button on her cell phone and call this guy up.
Why not risk it?
I’ve seen this happen to a few females, not just my cousin. What is with being so scared? If you know he likes you, you shouldn’t be afraid. It’s not always the guy who has to be the one to ask you out-let the girl power shine.
And most importantly, let him know whose boss.
Confidence is key (and not just with this, but everything). Most guys will be impressed if they see the girl is the one taking the initiative.
If you’re wondering what happens at the end of my story-my cousin did wind up calling him, and he hung out with us. He paid for her meal at the restaurant we went to, and at the end of the day he almost kissed her. He was very polite and earned my approval.
I’m not sure what comes next for them, we’ll just have to wait and see.
But just remember girls-sometimes guys get scared too.
