Video games help open National Library Week at Booth Library

Booth Library is celebrating National Library Week this week and is hosting several events and exhibitions.

Ellen Corrigan, chair of the National Library Week committee, said National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions that libraries, librarians and library workers make to their communities every day.

The theme of National Library Week is “Worlds Connect @ Your Library.”

A new addition to this year’s celebration will be Video Gaming Night, which is from 8 to 10 p.m. today.

The community is welcome to play popular video games on large projection screens in the library atrium.

“We hope to have a good turnout of students and others interested in video gaming,” Corrigan said.

She said the committee came up with the idea of Video Gaming Night as a way to get students involved in celebrating National Library Week.

Antonio Burton, a sophomore art education major, said it would give people who use the library some type of incentive for getting their work done.

“As we all know, it is a critical time towards the (end) of the semester and a little entertainment can ease up the tension of critical due dates,” he said.

Therese Djatche, a senior accounting major, thinks the idea of Video Gaming Night at the library is not a bad idea on occasion.

“I am an addict of video games,” Djatche said. “The library is a place of study, but one night a year is not a big deal.”

As an incentive to attend, a drawing for prizes will be held at Video Gaming Night.

Prizes include a pair of tickets to this year’s International Student Banquet, which ties into the theme of “Worlds Connect.” Other prizes in the drawing are a “Family Guy” game pack and disc carrying case.

The annual book sale also takes place this week. It is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday outside the north entrance of the library.

In connection with the book sale, this year the library is also sponsoring a drawing for the chance to win free books. Five winners will each receive a $10 gift certificate for the book sale. Entry forms are available at the main library desks.

Several exhibits related to National Library Week will also be on display during the week.
