Column: Get out and do something!

If there is one thing I just cannot stand to hear, its “I’m bored, there is nothing to do.”

There is absolutely no reason anyone should be bored in Charleston right now.

There are so many interesting things to do every day that it is impossible for one person to do them all.

So, don’t just sit there, letting yourself be bored.

Go out and do something!

What you decide to do is completely up to you, but there is no shortage of options.

Listen to one of the lectures that are on campus every week.

Go to a charity event.

Volunteer your time.

Play out in the quad.

Host a movie night.

It really does not matter what you are interested in, there is something for you to do.

Finding events on campus is really easy, too.

Eastern sends out e-mails to students with the events calendar.

Or you can visit the university’s Web site to look at the calendar.

Just this week, there was a musical revue at the Doudna Fine Arts Center, Greek Week, a benefit concert and lectures and informative sessions on a wide variety of topics.

This list is anything but complete.

There are at least three events listed for every day this past week.

So, before you say there is nothing to do, think about whether you actually made an effort to find something to do, or if you just assumed there was nothing going on.

If campus events don’t get you excited just check the page opposite this one.

Our calendar lists both on and off-campus events.

From rock shows to art shows to movies, there is no shortage of variety in the options either.

If public events aren’t your thing, check out the Coles County Animal Rescue & Education center. They will let you play with an animal that needs some attention and affection.

You get free entertainment and the animals benefit at the same time.

Now that the weather has finally become friendly again, go on a hike at Fox Ridge or start a game of tag in the quad.

Visiting the Lincoln Log Cabin site in Lerna makes for a fun afternoon, too.

They have a living history farm and a visitor’s center, so there are educational and entertainment opportunities together.

It really does not matter what you are interested in because Coles County literally has something for everyone.

So, please, do not say there is nothing to do.

Do not let yourself be bored; unless that’s what you want to do, it’s up to you.

Just don’t complain to me about it.
