Football: Late fumble ends Panthers’ chances
Eastern’s offense was methodically driving down the field with just more than two minutes remaining in the game.
Red-shirt junior quarterback Bodie Reeder completed five straight passes to move the Panthers (4-7, 2-5 Ohio Valley Conference) within 19 yards of the end zone. Red-shirt senior running back Travorus Bess then got the ball, rushed 13 yards and then fumbled the ball.
Austin Peay recovered and then ran out the clock to seal its 15-13 win on a cold, windy Saturday at O’Brien Stadium.
The Governors (2-8, 2-5 OVC) had 340 yards total offense with 176 of them coming on the ground. Red-shirt freshman running back Ryan White led the Govs with 124 yards rushing and one touchdown on 23 carries. Sophomore running back Terrence Holt added 85 yards on the ground on 11 caries.
Eastern’s offense struggled for the second consecutive game with 253 yards total offense. Bess led the Panthers with 74 yards rushing. Red-shirt sophomore Chevon Walker scored Eastern’s lone touchdown on a 20-yard run late in the first quarter.
Red-shirt senior kicker Tyler Wilke had two field goals (21 and 36 yards, respectively) to account for the Panthers six other points.
The Panthers’ defense was led by red-shirt freshman Cory Leman’s nine tackles. Red-shirt senior defensive ends Pierre Walters and Donovan Johnson combined for 16 tackles, four sacks, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick.
Eastern plays its final game at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 22 in Cookeville, Tenn., against Tennessee Tech.
