Concert Review: Girl Talk hits Canopy Club

Girl Talk brought about a brand new flavor in your ear among a sold-out crowd at Urbana’s Canopy Club on Nov. 5.

Gregg Gillis, aka Girl Talk, is a DJ from Pittsburgh who can be described as a nuclear warhead of energy just waiting to erupt throughout the crowd. Gillis began his craft as just an average college student while studying biomedical engineering. In 2007 he decided music was the reason he was sent to Earth and quit school to become a full-time musician.

Girl Talk has a style unlike any other DJ, and can appeal to anyone and everyone. Girl Talk is commonly known as a mash-up artist. This means he takes two or more popular songs and mixes them to make one solid song. His track range can dip into any genre of music such as classic rock, pop, electronic, and of course hip-hop.

Girl Talk’s live performance must be witnessed to appreciate the full commanded chaos that he brings to the crowd. Not a dry shirt or empty seat was left at the Nov. 5 performance.

The venue was relatively calm during the opening acts CX Kidtronik and The Death Set, but as soon as Girl Talk hit the stage the fuse was lit. The crowd rushed and climbed onto the stage to begin the bass-thumping, crowd-jumping, fist-pumping act that is Girl Talk.

His set list is an ever-changing mix of songs like Usher’s “Love In This Club,” Van Halen’s “Runnin’ with the Devil,” Young Bloodz’ “Damn,” and even the monumental “Faithfully” by Journey.

Girl Talk, who was surrounded by fans through the entire set, only had one security guard on stage with him. Nobody bothers the performer because they are too busy dancing and having a fun time, but we all know accidents happen. Girl Talk’s equipment was unplugged three times during the set. One of these times even caused the musician to clear the stage to fix the problems.

While the stage was cleared, the DJ table speakers were moved to the floor and a waterproofed plastic-wrapped computer was brought out. Girl Talk took the stage yet again and picked up right where he left off, fans swarming and all.

The final tracks spun were accompanied by Girl Talk standing on his DJ table hyping and dancing with the adoring fans.

Girl Talk is the experience of a lifetime. He offers a little bit of everything for everyone. Even if dancing is not your thing, Girl Talk is sure to make your feet move. If you get the chance, strap on your seatbelt and ride the rollercoaster that is Girl Talk.
