Street Drum Corps offers multiple styles

The Street Drum Corps offered up their interesting blend of punk rock and street music to Eastern students in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union Tuesday night.

Street Drum Corps is a punk percussion group that was founded in April of 2004 by brothers Adam and Bobby Alt and Frank Zummo.

They have shared the stage with members of popular bands such as No Doubt, Bad Religion and Good Charlotte, and they spent last summer on Linkin Park’s Projekt Revolution 2008 tour with acts like Chris Cornell and The Bravery.

Before the show, Brandt Schisler, a sophomore geography major, expressed his excitement.

“A friend of mine went to see Linkin Park last summer and saw Street Drum Corps,” he said. “He told me about the band. This is the first time I’ve seen them live and I’m very excited.”

The band began their show with a barrage of in-your-face rhythms and never looked back.

The wall of sound they created with their percussion was accompanied by a variety of high energy backing tracks.

Although the turnout at the Grand Ballroom was small, it did not seem to have any effect on the band or their performance.

“I like this, it’s a nice intimate crowd.it feels like we’re hanging out in our garage practicing,” said the band’s leader, Adam Alt.

At one point during the performance, the band invited three audience members up on stage to jam with them.

Their show featured instruments ranging everywhere from standard drums, all the way to garbage cans, buckets and kitchen utensils.

Amanda Cruse, a freshman nursing major, attended the show and was pleased with the group’s performance.

“I absolutely loved (it),” Cruse said. “It’s like techno meets punk meets Jumanji. They started playing like crazy and never really slowed down.”

The band has released two albums to date.

The self-titled debut album was released in 2006, and their second offering, “We Are Machines,” was released this year.

Street Drum Corps’ last performance of the year will take place in Hollywood where they will open for Motley Crue.
