Tsuyoshi Hasegawa’s 2005 book, “Racing the Enemy: Stalin, Truman, and the Surrender of Japan,” shook up the historical community upon its release, because the central argument he made was that the atomic bombs were not deciding factor for the Japanese to surrender. War with the Soviets was the deciding factor.
