Football: Run game leads Panthers to win

Eastern rushed for 226 yards as a team en route to its 34-6 win against Murray State on Saturday afternoon at O’Brien Stadium.

Freshman running back Desmin Ward led the way for the Panthers with 94 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Red-shirt senior running back Travorus Bess had 83 yards rushing, and red-shirt sophomore running back Chevon Walker added 80 yards rushing and one touchdown.

Eastern (4-5, 2-3 Ohio Valley Conference) jumped out to an early 21-0 lead before allowing the Racers’ first points of the game on a 19-yard field goal by freshman kicker Kienan Cullen with 1 minute, 50 seconds remaining in the first half. Cullen had a 34-yard field goal in the second half to account for all of the Racers’ scoring.

Murray State (3-6, 2-3 OVC) was led by sophomore quarterback Jeff Ehrhardt, who threw for 173 yards on 21-of-31 passing. He threw two interceptions.

Racers’ red-shirt senior linebacker Nathan Williams led all defensive players with 21 tackles (eight solo, 13 assisted). Williams also had one sack.

Eastern red-shirt junior quarterback Bodie Reeder threw just one incompletion on an interception in the second quarter. Reeder finished the game 10-of-11 for 68 yards.
