Doctor says Bonnstetter was sleepwalking

Updated 4:18 p.m. Oct. 24

Dr. Rosalind Cartwright testified Friday that Mark Bonnstetter was sleepwalking when he entered a former neighbor’s home during the early morning of Nov. 25, 2006.

Cartwright, who recently retired from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, evaluated Bonnstetter after a June 2007 medical referral.

She said Bonnstetter could not have been aware of the repercussions of his actions after he allegedly fondled his neighbor while she was sleeping.

She added he could not have had a mental thought process or motivation to plan his actions while sleepwalking in his neighbor’s home.

The defense rested its case Friday. The state will call a rebuttal witness Monday, when Bonnstetter’s trial resumes.

Bonnstetter was charged with criminal trespass to a residence, a class 4 felony; residential burglary, a class 1 felony; and attempted criminal sexual abuse, a class A misdemeanor on Nov. 28, 2006.
