Trying condoms on for size
Caitlin Below thought the Health Education Resource Center’s lecture on sex and alcohol was interesting and kind of funny.
Below, a junior finance major, was one of more than 65 students who attended HERC’s lecture, part five of its “Six pack series,” Wednesday night at Lumpkin Hall.
The presentation largely stressed the importance of safe sex.
Catherine Spannagel, the sexual health education coordinator at HERC and lecture leader, said shehopes the lecture got through to everyone who attended.
“It doesn’t always get through right away, sometimes it just clicks later,” Spannagel said. “It’s important because people drink and have sex and don’t know the effects and it is extremely important to know those effects.”
The lecture consisted of anonymous sexual polling questions such as what kind of sex students are having, what protection is used and whether students engage in sexual activity while under the influence of either alcohol or drugs.
Throughout the lecture, Rubber Lovers was mentioned several times.
Rubber Lovers is a group on campus that allows students to view statistics about safe sex as well as hands-on experience in applying the protection.
The group also hands out condoms to students to use in the future.
Maggie Munin, a senior elementary education major, said she went to the lecture because of a requirement for her sorority. She said the statistics on Sexually Transmitted Infections was an interesting part of the lecture.
“Make sure to use a condom properly,” Munin said. “Condoms are great.”
